About

A rhythm game that teaches binary search tree insertion. You are given a node and a tree to place it in, and you walk it down one comparison at a time in time with the music.

If your node is greater than or equal to the node below it, move right. Otherwise move left. When there is nothing left to compare against, lock it in. Inserting correctly earns points; inserting correctly on the beat earns considerably more.

Seven tracks, each charted at Normal, Hard and Expert, plus a dedicated set for the Boiler Gold Rush demo.

Modes

  • Single player: one chart, one tree
  • Player vs. player: two players side by side
  • Player vs. bot: the same, against the computer
  • Battle: build fast enough and you can send obstacles to your opponent

Two players

The whole game runs on four directions, which is what lets it work on dance pads. Player one uses W A X D, a gamepad d-pad, or the first pad on a Twin USB Gamepad adapter; player two uses I J , L, a second gamepad, or the second pad. Two Konami DDR pads therefore run a full head-to-head match.

Development

Built over the summer with Kenneth Enow under Professor Andres Bejarano in Purdue's CS department, as a research project on teaching data structures through play. Being demoed at Boiler Gold Rush 2026.
